Time to Celebrate World Environment Day

Time to Celebrate World Environment Day

Today (Monday 5 June) marks World Environment Day, and with this in mind, we thought we’d share a little bit about what it is, this year’s theme and why it’s so important to us here at Thought.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day was first held in 1973. It was started by the United Nations and designed to be a day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.

What is this year’s theme?

This year’s theme for World Environment Day is #BeatPlasticPollution, 'Ecosystem Restoration' and is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matters - not least because the steps governments and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are the consequence of this action.

What does World Environment Day mean to Thought?

As a brand with sustainability and care for the planet at the heart of all we do, protecting the beautiful world around us is vitally important - which means World Environment Day is, too.

And this year’s theme particularly resonates with us. Single-use plastic has hugely detrimental environmental, social, economic and health consequences. It causes environmental degradation, loss of aquatic life and fills up our landfills. It contaminates water bodies and releases toxic substances into the air, water and soil.  And since the 1970s, sadly, the rate of plastic production has grown faster than that of any other material.

Here at Thought, we’ve really tried to buck that trend since we started back in 1995. Our packaging is completely plastic-free - we use biodegradable cornstarch mail bags instead.

We hope everything we do, in fact - from abstaining from air-freight delivery to the natural, earth-kind crops we use and our commitment to continually improve our eco-friendly credentials - shows our passion for the beautiful world we live in.

How can I get involved in World Environment Day?

There are lots of ways you can get involved in World Environment Day. With this year’s theme specifically in mind, you could make a commitment to trying to reduce your single-plastic use this week by taking your own reusable bags to a store or using a reusable cup for takeaway tea or coffee (if you don’t already). Or why not have a litter-picking day in your local area?
