To discover more, we caught up with Braintree designer Laura Thomson, for an exclusive insight into the unique Autumn Prairie Collection; her favourite seasonal pieces, the inspiration behind the range, as well as her top styling tips…
Hi Laura! How would you describe the new collection in a few words?
Patchworked, easy indigos, layering pieces.
What was the inspiration behind the Autumn Prairie collection?
Key trends like patchwork, “normcore” layering, cosy knits and indigo blues kickstarted this Autumn’s collection. We also really wanted to give our customers some great relaxed, weekend pieces to sit alongside our new organic denim jeans. Looking west to classic American jeanswear styling was a good place to start, combined with the pretty feminity and quirky styling details that are part of our Braintree DNA.
What do you do to begin the process?
We always start with colour and print direction. Our colour palettes take a while to finesse, as the range is built on a subtle and clever blend of layering tones – that’s a big part of what makes them so easy and relaxed to wear.
Do you design with someone in mind?
I have a few different people in mind when working on the collection, women of different ages and styles who encompass the breadth of our customer base and who wear the range in very different ways. As we start to sell more into other countries with their different styles and looks, it really helps to have such an international team at head office!
What has been your favourite part of working on the collection?
I always love the initial development of colour and print direction. this season I’m also excited about the new jacquard knits we’re doing and our organic denim. After launching our “BE” range and seeing it take off, it’s great to be finding other pieces and looks that can become signature for us.
How do you decide which fabrics to use?
Rachel and the team do a lot of research with our manufacturers and come up with lots of interesting new ideas. As a team, we go through them and pick out the very best to take through into the range, all the while ensuring that they’re ethical, interesting and wearable. The whole area of recycled fibres is growing for us too, which is great.
When it comes to fashion, which trends are you loving for Autumn 2014?
I love the whole feeling for layered looks that see you mixing a plaid check piece with a chunky knit and a parka, as well as the key trends for blanket coats and scarves – just great for those blustery autumn days! Patchwork pieces and patterned item dresses for layering are also both new and easy to introduce into my wardrobe this season…
What’s your favourite piece from the Autumn collection and how would you style it?
I can’t pick just one i’m afraid! I love either the saskia dress or carly check dress for layering up with a chunky knit and boots, as well as the printed dashka slacks for lazy weekends at home.
What’s your top tip for dressing the Autumn collection?
Layer, layer and then layer! All the pieces really do work with each other, as the palette is super-easy to work with and the prints and patterns are soft and harmonious. Keep bringing it all back to denim and you can’t go wrong – and have fun with it!
Thank you Laura!
