Stockist Stories: Boho Boo, Darlington
Following our first chat with stockist Jo Amor, this month we talk with Diane and Richard, the owners of Boho Boo – a charming boutique that’s just a stones-throw from Darlington.
Tea & Chat with Boho Boo Darlington
Hi Diane, please can you tell our readers a bit about your shop? How would you describe it?
Boho Boo is situated in a grade II listed building in the lovely market town of Barnard Castle.
How did you come up with the name?
Our store name Boho Boo is named after our 18 year old daughter Abigail who has been known to family and friends as Boo from the moment she was born. The Boho bit comes from us selling an eclectic mix of clothing and unique giftware the you won’t necessarily find in a high street store.
How long have you been open?
We have been trading for 20 years. Originally we were a giftware and accessories store but in 2012 we changed our focus to clothing led with accessories. 25 Market Place has been in our family since 1971 owned initially by Diane’s father as a wallpaper and paint store. We have deeds going back as far as 1720 detailing the building as a gentleman’s residence, drapery store, girls school and finally Walter Wilsons supermarket.
Tell us a little about Barndard Castle? What do you love most about the area – maybe you know a hidden gem?
Barnard Castle is a lovely market town with the world renowned Bowes Museum which last year hosted the Yves St Laurent exhibition. Barnard Castle was the only place outside Paris to have ever been able to host such an event and was hand chosen because the museum was built in the 19th Century by John and Josephine Bowes and is styled as a French Chateau. This year they are hosting a shoe exhibition from the V&A called Pleasure and Pain which will definitely be worth a visit.
Which is your favourite piece from our current collection?
What is life like outside the shop?
Life is hectic outside work, we have 2 children Thomas, 22, who has just finished his masters in Biomedical Science at Lincoln and is moving to Oxford University in October to study for a Phd, and Abigail, 18, who is currently studying for A Levels and is going to Northampton University in September to study International Development.
How do you like to unwind?
To unwind we live in lovely house which overlooks stunning scenery and rolling hills. To unwind we potter in the garden with our two dogs Floss and Fudge. We love to garden and relax by our garden pond, feeding the fish.
What would you be doing if you didn’t have the shop?
If we didn’t have the shop we would spend more time developing property. We have done many projects over the years refurbishing and rebuilding properties and are in the process of taking on another one.
Where was the last place you travelled to?
The last place we travelled to was Wengen Switzerland in February skiing with friends. We hired a chalet and had a fabulous time, Richard even skied the famous Lauberhorn run, I chicken out…
Thanks for chatting, Diane – it was great to catch up.
