For every pair of sustainable socks purchased on our website in December 2018, we donated a pair to the British Red Cross. The socks were sent to their Hackney Destitution Resource Centre, who support asylum seekers and refugees across London. Thanks to you, our wonderful customers, we managed to send a whopping 11,000 pairs to the British Red Cross. Last week, I visited the Hackney Destitution Resource Centre to follow the journey of our donated socks and meet the people that would be receiving them.

We donated 11,000 sustainable socks to the British Red Cross thanks to you

My visit to the centre

In the morning, I am greeted at the door by the lovely Gloria, Manager at the Hackney Centre, who kindly shows me around.

The centre is within a beautifully old, Tardis-like building, housing many high-ceilinged rooms, each serving a different purpose. We start with the offices, which are tucked away on the top floor, where I’m introduced to the centre’s dedicated team.  We tread into another room at the back of the building where boxes are stacked high – full of Thought’s donated socks.

Downstairs, there’s an activities room housing some tables and chairs, cheerful bunting, colourful walls of photos, a table at one end serving today’s breakfast, and a projector at the other. Here, the centre run a range of activities which are both skills-based and social. The room next door houses the kitchen, where chefs are busily preparing for the day ahead. On the same floor is a luggage room, for people to store their belongings if need be.

Finally the ground floor, which is bustling with activity, as food and clothing packs are being prepared for the queue of people forming outside. It is clear that our generous donation of socks is dearly appreciated here. So from all of us here at Thought, thank you for buying our sustainable socks this December and helping us donate so many to the British Red Cross.

Gloria:  “The socks have really been well received and the team are so happy to be able to give out such great quality, new socks. We are massively grateful.”

More about the British Red Cross’s Hackney Centre

The British Red Cross’s Hackney Destitution Service supports destitute asylum seekers and refugees across London. Their beneficiaries come from a range of countries – many are from Eritrea, the DRC, Nigeria, and other countries such as Iran and Pakistan. The people they care for receive very minimal or no support, and are often homeless or living in temporary shelters.  The centre distributes 200-250 food parcels a week to individuals and families, and once a month they distribute hygiene packs. As well as these items, they give nappies, clothing and other items that are received through donations. The centre offers breakfast and a hot lunch, laundry, showers as well as a safe space to relax.
