Polka dots energise laid-back staples. Art Nouveau textiles and photographic prints become the pop of understated silhouettes. This is a collection with bold bohemian edge, borrowed from model, muse, traveller and photographer, Lee Miller.

Bold Beauty: a collection inspired by Lee Miller

This season we look to the extraordinary life of American photographer, Lee Miller. Our talented in-house design team have created a collection reflecting the laid back chic style of this pioneering woman. As both model and muse, Miller spent much of her life in Paris as part of the Surrealist art movement, but soon took to working behind the camera as a highly original and innovative photographer, credited with discovering the ‘solarisation’ process.

Mixing with artists and bohemians in the café society of Paris, Miller trail blazed her way with talent and confidence. Marrying an Egyptian, she left Paris for Cairo and continued to photograph and document her surroundings, before World War II set new challenges. Miller became Vogue magazine’s official war photographer, spending several years in harrowing environments. Her photos from this time are moving and thought provoking.

Miller’s effortless style strikes a chord with today’s aesthetic, and we have incorporated many print and styling details into the collection to tell her fascinating story.

1. Lee’s Story Skirt

“With such a fascinating life story we were keen to develop a print that featured key moments from Lee Miller’s life and the places she visited – and this skirt is the result. Look closely and you’ll find among other things the New York skyline, the pyramids of Egypt, Lee on a fashion shoot and photographing Berlin after the 2nd World War.”

2. Patrice Dress

“The solarisation technique that Lee pioneered, broke new ground in photography. The print used for this dress pays due homage. The dress shape itself is loose and contemporary with a flattering neckline and pleat details, a perfect style for our soft and supple Modal bamboo fabric.”

3. Quinn Shirt

“Everyone needs a white shirt or two in their wardrobe, and I’m very proud of our own take on this essential wardrobe classic. With its carefully constructed slim collar and flattering panelling detail it is the perfect piece to wear with any of our trousers or culottes. But don’t confine it to workwear – with its loose fit and soft drapey Modal cotton fabric this piece will see you through to the weekend too.”
