tomorrow, we thought we’d give you a look into what happened at our Autumn Winter 18 shoot! Read on to discover more about our design inspiration and what went on during shoot week…

A bit about our inspiration
Our pre-Autumn collection comes in two parts, the first named Cultural Odyssey and the other, Into the Woods. Cultural Odyssey takes inspiration from the fantastical tale of the immortal courtier, Orlando
, by Virginia Woolfe. We echo the culture clash; East meets West – informing our print handwriting. From Tudor architecture to exotic desert scenes, softened with embroidery, indigo blues and gold highlights.
Shadows, branches, moonlight and mystery inspire our relaxed weekend collection, Into the Woods. We take to the forest to explore its bewitching silhouettes and spectrum of shades. Its beauty and twilight hour hues inspiring our easy-as-ever weekend wear.
There are two parts to our Autumn collection too. First, we have The Odyssey Continues… where our cultural expedition ventures further. An injection of colour revives the first collection. Mediterranean-inspired carpet craft is mixed with Middle eastern artisan textiles. The two mingle with swooping palm leaves which hint at the exotic. Shades of rust, aubergine, graphite bring us back home – mimicking and celebrating the season around us.
Second for Autumn is our Bloomsbury collection where we look to the home of artist Vanessa Bell, part of the famed 1920’s literary set. We echo her canvas like walls, decorative motifs and the colours she favoured in our hand-sketched prints and embroidery. Our silhouettes borrow from the looser, carefree attitude of her time.
And lastly, for Winter we introduce our School of Art collection, where we look to the abstract realism of Joan Eardley’s paintings. Her vibrant portrayals of Glaswegian streets give us endless inspiration. Cue mark-making, a loose, expressive approach to brushstrokes and silhouettes which celebrate the artists’ smock. The city’s urban creatures – the fox in particular – lend us rich, rustic colour references.
Now over to our print and accessories designer Lindsey and our photographer Tara to tell you more about our shoot locations and what happened throughout the week.
Lindsey sets the scene
“Our eCommerce shoot came first, taking place at our in-house studio. This day is always busy and filled with tonnes of laughter and great music, creating an upbeat atmosphere. Sophie, a returning model of ours, showed off her dance moves and party tricks in-between shooting, which made us all laugh.” – Lindsey
Our first location was an old house near Deptford. This much-loved piece of English Heritage was the ideal, pared-back setting for our AW18 shoot.
“Myself and our Senior Buyer, Ellie were up at the crisp hour of 4am to head to the first location, which overlooked the River Thames. As you can imagine, we had wonderful views but it was blusteringly cold! We had to wrap up in so many layers, even doubling up on scarves to keep the chill away. We helped keep Tara and the models warm too, by topping up their hot drinks and giving them plenty of blankets in between shooting. Rachel saved the day with her amazing homecooked food at lunch; this time, we were treated to a lentil dahl which was hearty and warming – just what we needed. We had some fun towards the end of the day, trying to recreate the infamous Kate Moss shot that was taken at this location, by Mario Testino!” – Lindsey
"To end the week, we shot at our second location, a studio in North London. The space was beautiful with so many great backdrops to shoot against. Plus it was full of plants - dreamy! Again, it was a bitter cold so we were all wrapped up in coats, scarves and layers of socks." – Lindsey
"As always, it was such fun shooting with the team and creating more memories. The week flies by. We are very lucky to have a team that engage so well with one another, never failing to make each other laugh.” – Lindsey
Notes from our photographer, Tara
“I try and use natural light as much as possible, which tends to be a challenge in winter. We didn't use artificial light at all at our first location which was difficult, but we achieved the look we wanted!” – Tara
“Then at our second location we introduced lighting, working as a team of three to recreate natural light. We used special equipment to give off light as if shining through trees – it’s very subtle.” – Tara
“We keep the models mood very natural – mostly as if caught unaware. We prefer models that come across with a lovely attitude on camera; relaxed and real. So when casting, it's a real challenge not only to get the right look, but to get someone who can give us the mood that we're looking for – even if they (and the rest of us) are feeling the cold!” – Tara
