FSC Friday: discover more about the Forest Stewardship Council and how to support them

What is the FSC?

Established in 1994, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was the world’s first, not-for-profit forest certification system, dedicated to the global promotion of responsible forest management worldwide.

Why is it important to support the FSC and protect our forests?

The FSC work to prohibit deforestation, protect rare, endangered species and old growth forests, and restrict the use of hazardous chemicals. Forests are key to clean water. Today, most of the world’s population lives downstream of forested watersheds. 1.3 billion people (about one-fifth of the global population) depend on forests and trees for employment, forest products, and contributions to livelihoods and incomes. Today, over 195 million hectares of forests in 84 countries worldwide are managed according to FSC standards. These include boreal, temperate and tropical forests owned publicly, privately and by communities. forest stewardship council
