International Yoga Day 2017: We Chat To Annie Clarke Of Mind Body Bowl
What first inspired you to take up yoga?
Honestly it was first about fitness. I wanted to find a new way to workout and stretch my body. Since then, I realised that for me, yoga isn’t about exercise any more but that was my starting point and we all come to the mat for different reasons. Now it is about connection, finding a way to learn about myself and build a greater sense of self-awareness.
Do you have a favourite yoga pose?
I get asked this a lot and the short answer is no. Different poses feel good at different times and bring different things. I spend a lot of time upside down at the moment, working on my handstand practice. It has become my instant energiser if I’m feeling sluggish to just hop on my mat and have a play!
What do you consider the most essential things for a healthy, happy life?
To find what works for you. We spend so much time looking at and imitating what works for others but we are all so individual that we have to tap into what works on an individual layer and focus on that!
Do you have a hidden talent?
I did something the other day and thought to myself ‘yes! I finally have a party trick” but when it got to sharing it I forgot what it was! I don’t think I have anything else… I can paint and sew but I’m not sure they count!
What was the last book you read?
When Breath Becomes Air – its stunning. You have to read it!
How did Mind Body Bowl come about?
When I left university I changed my diet and lifestyle because I was struggling with feeling awful all the time. My blog and Instagram were an outlet for that because back then there wasn’t so much conversation around wellness and my friends and family weren’t as interested in it as I was. I guess the community started building around it and I started to connect with like-minded people. I never meant for it to be public but I guess that went out the window and I just went with the flow!
Where do you feel most inspired? / What inspires you?
My yoga practice provides me with a lot of inspiration and when I hear about people that have dealt with challenging things, particularly people I know, they become my inspiration.
Do you have a role model?
I try not to compare myself to anyone but of course there are lots of people that I look up to. My mum is pretty awesome so I’d say she stands out from the others the most.
What are the words you live by?
Everything happens for a reason.
And lastly, what does living thoughtfully mean to you?
Being mindful of our words, thoughts, actions and reactions and leaving a space, place or person a little bit better than when you arrived.
