Emma's Top Mindful Movies

Since I stopped watching TV several years ago, I notice that movies have a really big effect on my state of mind. I watch them from time-to-time on my Mac screen and I tell you, they stay with me for days. Maybe it’s not the movies that have a bigger effect, but that I am more able to see the effect they have been having on me through ‘watchfulness’ (just like mindfulness). For example, I recently took the time to watch the 3-hour movie 2001: A Space Odyssey all the way through – previously, I had only ever seen the end. Movies, like music, have a profound effect on your thinking and your quality of consciousness. It’s a very interesting phenomenon. If you are keen to explore watchfulness too, why not watch your movies mindfully? Start by noticing the responses that happen, in both your body and your thinking – both during and after the movie. Here are a few of my favourite mindful movies. They are thought provoking, inspiring and fun…   10 Top Mindful Movies

1. The Truman Show (1998)

An insurance salesman (Jim Carrey) discovers his entire life is actually a TV show. An oldie, but still with a very topical subject that makes you think, “What if?”.

2. The Cloud Atlas (2012)

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

3. Saving Mr. Banks (2013)

I’ve heard that this one’s quite good – it’s a period drama, and centres on the story of how the film Mary Poppins was brought to the screen.   10 Top Mindful Movies

4. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004)

Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) has broken up with his love, Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), only to find that she has had all traces of him deleted from her memory. In an act of despair, Joel decides to undergo the same procedure through the inventor of the erasure process, Dr Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Although, along the way, Joel comes to the realisation that he doesn't really want to forget Clementine after all.

5. I Heart The Huckabees (2004)

A husband-and-wife team play detective, but not in the traditional sense. Instead, the happy duo helps others solve their existential issues, the kind that keeps you up at night, wondering what it all means.

6. The Matrix (1999)

A now-iconic computer hacker (Keanu Reeves) learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.   10 Top Mindful Movies

7. Seven Years In Tibet (1997)

The true story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China's takeover of Tibet.

8. Being John Malkovich (2000)

Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) is a struggling street puppeteer. In order to make money, Craig takes a job as a filing clerk. One day he accidentally discovers a door… a portal into the mind of John Malkovich (played by John Malkovich).

9. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Humanity finds a mysterious, obviously artificial object buried beneath the lunar surface and, with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a never-before quest.   10 Top Mindful Movies

10. Amelie (2001)

This adorable, Paris-based story centres on Amelie, a smart, young lady who likes to orchestrate the lives of those around her. Until one day, love happens all of its own accord.   Already seen some of these?
