Pintucks and pleats. Blouses and broderie anglaise. This collection borrows its details from Victorian times. Prints and colours are bold, expressive and from all corners of the globe. This is a story of exploration, of flora and fauna, and inspired by globe-trotting painter, Marianne North.
Summer 19: Marianne North inspires our new collection
Brighter days bring us a brand new collection. That’s right, Summer 19 is here! And this season we take inspiration from the incredible life of Marianne North, a Victorian biologist and self-taught painter who travelled to all corners of the globe. She challenged conventions and the expectation of the women of her time, painting the remarkable plants and animals that she encountered on her voyages, in vibrant oil paints.
Marianne’s life and work are largely unknown. So through our summer collection, we resurrect and celebrate her achievements. A culture clash of Victorian and ethnic cultures give added interest to this season’s story. We look to Victorian fashion, incorporating broderie anglaise, pleats and pintucks to our designs. We also sourced an antique ikat kimono to give extra pattern interest – something that Marianne may well have worn on her travels.
Mark, our head of design’s favourite summer pieces
“The Marianne collection was great fun to work on – a journey of creative exploration as we delved into the extraordinary life of Marianne North.”
“The Rosabel Top
is simple and effortless, in our 100% hemp. It echoes our ethnic inspirations with a clean V-neck and wide sleeves. The loose silhouette and subtle pleat detailing give a cool and contemporary feel that’ll last through the summer months.”
“We sourced a beautiful, antique, Indonesian kimono for this print which we re-scaled and re-coloured to create a stunning 100% Tencel dress
. It comes in a versatile shift shape that can be dressed up or down. Plus, it has the benefit of pockets to give both practicality and extra styling interest.”
“A lot of fun was had with the paintbrush to create this print
. It’s a modern take on a botanical print that echoes Marianne’s love of deep and intense oil colour painting. This dress
features a subtle pleat detail at the back which gives new styling detail to a simple shift dress.”
“We commissioned this print
from a local artist to reflect Marianne North’s incredible botanical paintings. Digital printing enabled us to get the subtlety of the brushstrokes and depth of colour – you’re truly wearing a work of art when you wear these trousers
. Paired with a simple white top
they’re perfect for casual summer events as an alternative to a dress.”
“Cropped wide leg trousers are a true summer essential and this season we’ve developed a yarn dyed stripe in our 100% hemp fabric to create these stylish and comfortable culottes
. The paper bag waist adds a modern styling twist with elasticity at the back to ensure the perfect fit.”
