Build a Capsule Wardrobe with Emma Paton

This summer, we launched our first ever Capsule collection. We are particularly excited about this as we believe that having a small wardrobe of ‘essential’ pieces encourages us to think more intentionally about the pieces we buy, to minimise stock-piling clothes, and to have better quality pieces that are versatile and comfortable.

Emma Paton tried on some of the pieces from our Capsule collection, and showed us how she’d style each one. We had a chat with her about the concept of a ‘capsule’ wardrobe, and asked her what her favourite pieces are from the collection. Read the full interview below.

What Does a ‘Capsule’ Wardrobe Mean to You?

A capsule wardrobe should be seasonless pieces that are the foundations and building blocks of your day to day wardrobe. Pieces you can mix and match but also where you can add in more seasonal and directional fashion styles to update and refresh them.

Why Do You Think a ‘Capsule’ Wardrobe Helps Towards Living a More Sustainable Life?

I think having a capsule wardrobe will save time (avoid those 'I have nothing to wear' mornings!) and money in the long run and avoid impulse purchases that you may not get much wear out of. Capsule pieces are designed to be well used and should be versatile and timeless so that you won’t need to buy new clothes all the time or feel you have too many gaps in your wardrobe. Sustainable dressing is all about getting as much wear as possible out of your clothes.

Which Pieces from The Thought ‘Capsule’ Collection Did You Enjoy Styling the Most?

My favourite pieces were the Isabella Mac - I’ve been after a navy Mac for ages, it’s the perfect oversized shape and will be well used on the school run. I also love the Ottoline Dungarees - I love the slim leg fit and stretch denim, I also like that dungarees are now a bit of a wardrobe staple! They look so good with skinny roll necks and blouses.

Which Pieces do You Think Are the Most Essential For a ‘Capsule’ Wardrobe?

I think it depends, if you pre-dominantly have a workwear wardrobe, then having a white shirt and black trousers are essential. If, like me, a casual everyday look makes up most of your wardrobe then a really good tee and some jeans are best. I also think a classic coat is a bit of a must have piece too.
