Sustainable Summer Events: What's On this August

The Thought: summer holidays, but make it sustainable. Whether you’re entertaining the kids or yourselves, there is so much on offer this summer to enjoy (whilst keeping our lovely planet in mind).

The Feeling: we’ve put together some recommendations to make it easier for you to fill your calendar with fun earth-kind activities.

The Activities:

Food Forever at Kew Gardens

Food, we can’t live without it. But the world is changing, and so is what we eat. Kew is hosting a series of talks, guest menus, activities and art installations to explore the future of food. Discover how we can transform our planet for the better, protect food security, combat climate change and secure a sustainable future.

Green Man Festival

Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Breacon Beacons, not only is this festival a nature-lover's paradise, it’s also a haven for the eco-conscious. Named the UK’s most sustainable festival this year, being green is fundamental to Green Man. They don’t use plastic straws (never have), refuse to serve drinks in single-use cups (every festival goer must purchase their own reusable stacking cup) and all the food traders packaging and cutlery will be certifiable compostable.

Sustainability is a key theme throughout the line-up too. From foraging medicinal herbs and natural paint making workshops to ‘Mission: Save The World’ they have plenty of creative activities to stimulate the eco-conscious and eco-curious.

National Allotments Week

8-14th August marks National Allotments Week. The theme for 2022 is Bugs, Bees and Broccoli and acknowledges the importance of gardening with nature in mind. To encourage young people to engage with nature and learn a bit more about their surroundings, Children aged 2-12 can get involved with a nationwide even called The Big Hunt through their school or learning community. The idea is to head out into any green space and see what creepy crawlies they can find. Plus the school or setting that has the MOST bug hunts returned in their region will win a prize. Happy (bug) hunting!
